Hey Nikita … just discovered you today and thank for discussing this important topic.
I believe Google has been carbon neutral for a long time now. Don’t remember if it’s just GCP or the whole do Google. Would that imply that any resources used to train Gemini are being offset ?
Thanks Satrujeet :) and I hope you enjoy the course! You are correct that since 2017 Google has matched 100% of its global energy use by purchasing renewable energy. What this means is that Google puts onto the grid new additional wind and solar projects that match on an annual basis the same amount of energy in megawatt hours that are consumed annually. So yes, Gemini training is offset. Matching 100% of energy consumption is a good first start, but that still leaves places and times where cloud operations rely on fossil fuels. That's why Google is pursuing a goal of 24/7 carbon free energy by 2030. The main distinction here is that instead of matching energy at a global/yearly level, 24/7 carbon free matches at an hourly and per location level. https://www.google.com/about/datacenters/cleanenergy/
